Le Fagots de Monsieur Croque-Mitaine...

This book has been adopted by Helene Tieger, ’85.

Contes pour les petit enfants, 1817. 2nd ed.

Renneville, Madame de (Sophie de Senneterre).

This early book of children’s stories includes a bookplate of William Bard and bears the inscription of his sister Eliza, the youngest child of Dr. Samuel and Mary Bard.  Born after the death of four of their children to a scarlet fever epidemic, Eliza was particularly cherished by the Bards who took great pains in the education of all of their children.  Eliza was John Bard’s aunt, and she married John McVickar, early trustee of St. Stephen’s College. This edition is quite rare, appearing in the catalogs of only two libraries in the United States, and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France.  Translated as ‘The Bundles of Mr. Croque-Mitaine,’ (i.e. Mr. Hobgoblin or Bogeyman), this title is written by Sophie de Senneterre, Mme de Renneville during the same decade that her better-known colleagues, the Brothers Grimm, published their first book of fairy tales. 2 holdings in Worldcat.
