Bard Receipt Book

This book has been adopted by Helene Tieger, ’85.

Bound manuscript book of recipes created by Catherine Cruger Bard 1803.

Catherine Cruger Bard was the mother of John Bard, who with his wife Margaret, founded the college in 1860.  This handwritten book contains recipes for such dishes as roast tongue, stewed sheep’s head and turtle soup, any of which were probably served for dinner at the Bard home in the early nineteenth century.  Also included are medicinal remedies in the hand of John’s grandfather, Dr. Samuel Bard. This book was given to Bard College in 1965 by Mrs. J.G. Phelps Stokes, a Bard family descendant. This title has been digitized and transcribed and can be viewed here.
