Dante Alighieri.

This two volume set of Dante’s Inferno, and Purgatory and Paradise are translated by Henry Francis Cary and illustrated  by Gustave Dore. Published in 1885 and 1886  these represented a ‘new’ edition of this classic work, providing critical and explanatory notes on the original text, the life of Dante, and a chronology. Dore’s engravings provide the powerful images that we associate with Dante’s travels in Hell. These volumes were given to the college by Dante scholar Irma Brandeis, who taught at Bard from 1945 to 1972.
