Sacre theologie magistri necnon sacri eloquij.

Caracciolo, Roberto.

This incunable represents a book of sermons written by Roberto Caraciollo, 1425-1495, a Franciscan friar, and one of the most famous Italian preachers of his time. It was discovered while working to address a backlog of old books housed in the Library. At one time the book was put on display, as an enclosed paper caption indicates that this was the oldest book in the Library. The bookplate reads “Library of St. Stephen’s College. The gift of the Rev. John Ireland Tucker, D.D., Vice President of the Board of Trustees, and for more than fifty years Rector of the Church of the Holy Cross, Troy, N.Y.”

Conservation Treatment

Approximate dimensions: 7 3/4 H x 5 1/2 W x 1 1/4 D

Condition: This book was rebound in full leather in the 19th century. The spine is missing. Both front and back boards remain but are in poor condition with worn and lost leather and large cracks in the surface. The book had combed marbled endleaves and red and white striped cotton fabric stuck-on endbands attached when it was rebound, both with damage and loss. The text block has red speckled edges. The original text block is in stable condition and is fairly clean. It was probably trimmed and received edge decoration when it was rebound.

Requested treatment: The text block should be cleaned as needed with old, damaged binding elements removed. The book will receive new endpapers, spine linings and a simple case binding, made of linen/cotton book cloth and using appropriate papers for endpapers and perhaps the sides of the covers. New endbands and a hollow tube may be applied, depending on the flexibility of the book when relined. This is a similar treatment applied to previous Stevenson Library commissions. The original 19th c. endpapers and book covers will be retained in a folder or wrappers. The red-rot leather on the boards will be consolidated and the endpapers cleaned. A Mylar wrapper will be applied to the book. The rebound book and old binding materials will be placed in a custom box made by me, or Bard can purchase an inexpensive box from Talas to fit. I can provide measurements. The book and box will be labelled with information provided or approved by Helene Tieger.
