Government of the Tongue, 1674

Allestree, Richard.

Written while author Richard Allestree was provost at Eaton College, chapter titles for this book describe such topics as would be useful for the moral instruction of boys: ‘Of Atheistical Discourse;’ ‘Of Scoffing and Derision;’  ‘Of Flattery’…or even: ‘Of Obscene Talk.’

Our copy contains two bookplates; one on the front cover presenting the name Sands, illustrated by their coat of Arms; the other on the back cover indicating that it was a gift to the library of St. Stephen’s College presented by C. (Charles) Sands, Esq. Charles was the third of five Sands brothers, sons of Susan Bard and Ferdinand Sands.  Orphaned early, they were raised by their grandparents, William and Catherine Cruger Bard, parents of John Bard. In the 1860s, Charles and his family were neighbors to his uncle and aunt, John and Margaret Bard, occupying the farmhouse that would become the present Sands House dormitory.
