Farmers’ Tour through the East of England, 1771.

Young, Arthur.

Written by the English writer Arthur Young, known for his books on agricultural methods, and remembered as an astute social and political observer, these volumes relate 18th century farming techniques and the results of agricultural experiments in different regions of England. They also detail many statistics, including wages and provisions for workers that later helped lay the groundwork for land reform. Owned by William Bard, and then by John Bard who presented these to St. Stephen’s College. The library possesses two volumes of this four-volume edition.

Conservation Treatment

Measurements: 8 ¼ x 5 ¼ x 1 ¾ in.
Full-leather binding previously treated with a consolidant that has caused extensive damage. The leather is brittle; the boards are adhered to the pages at the front of volume 3 prohibiting the book from opening.  The cords are nearly broken in one location, the spine is heavily adhered to the spine; the back corner board has a missing piece.

Treatment: As treatment may result in the total loss of the spine and the value of the book is largely in its history, these books will be cleaned, stabilized and re-housed. The front endpapers will be detached from the front board and necessary paper and repairs made. Protective polyester wrapper and custom corrugated board box.
